About Trade Checka

Trade Checka’s conception began with its owner, Dean Thompson, becoming a first-time homeowner of one unit in a complex of thirty and the opportunity to join the body corporate as chairman. The first project was an urgent paint job to reduce the chances of a leaky building. It was Dean’s job to manage the $300,000 project including all the contractors and paint suppliers.

Memories returned of watching the television show ‘Fair Go’ as a Child and seeing builders and trades ‘rip-off’ unsuspecting homeowners. Sometimes this would keep him up at night, wondering if he was making the right decisions on behalf of all the unit owners. It spurred him to do his research well – he spoke with people who had done apartment renovations before, and he read every news article, blog post and YouTube video that offered advice on the matter.

Then Patrick came along. Patrick was a good painter, he’d been in his trade for almost 20 years, had the experience of doing all sorts of jobs and knew his stuff. He gave Dean options, advice, and examples of previous work done which provided Dean with the confidence he needed.

Just two weeks before the project started, Patrick realised that the colour matching by the paint manufacturer was wrong. There was a mad panic to change the specifications and timeline. It wasn’t Patrick’s fault, but the paint manufacturers. And if Patrick wasn’t so clued up, they could have lost thousands of dollars.

Long story short, the job was completed, but Dean thought that there had to be a better way – like checking on the paint manufacturer – it sure would’ve saved a lot of stress and valuable time. In 2020 Trade Checka was born, the system was designed in 2021 and then launched in 2022.

It works both ways, Trades should be able to check on homeowners – that they will pay their bills before they order in supplies. And homeowners should be able to sleep at night knowing their project will be completed.”
